The Department of Pharmacy at St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital is a family of caring individuals whose mission is to contribute to excellent patient care by optimizing drug therapy. Our vision is to be a world-renown department of pharmacy where the best and brightest want to work.
Focusing on that vision, we utilize leading edge technology to promote efficiency and patient safety. Our Clinical Pharmacists collaborate with nurses and physicians to optimize care for each patient. Our Clinical Coordinators bring specialized expertise to various service lines in the hospital, support the on-going education and development of all pharmacy staff, and devote time to precepting pharmacy students and residents. Certified pharmacy technicians prepare sterile products, manage first doses and unit-based cabinet refills from the Medcarousel, barcode and package unit dose medications, enter medication orders into the pharmacy information system, and provide support throughout the department.
St. Luke’s has embraced technology to advance patient safety, including barcode medication administration and the phase-in of computerized physician order entry. The pharmacists have easy access to patient information and utilize trigger reports to target high risk therapeutic situations. Medication distribution is provided from a central pharmacy, unit-based dispensing cabinets, centralized cleanroom, and satellite pharmacies in the OR, PACU, and ED.
Pharmacy residencies and fellowships at St. Luke’s include a PGY-1 Pharmacy Practice residency, PGY-2 Residencies specializing in Critical Care and Cardiology, a two year Infectious Diseases Fellowship, and a two year Pharmacy Administration Residency in conjunction with a University of Houston Master of Science in Pharmacy Administration Program.
