Neurological Critical Care

The NeuroScience Intensive Care Team specializes in providing quality care for patients with life-threatening neurological illness, including:

Technology in Action 

St. Luke's Neuro-ICU houses a portable CT scanner which allows head CT scans to be performed in the ICU at the patient's bedside, so scanning can be performed without interruption or moving the patient from the ICU.

Specialized Care

Other ICU Technology Available:

  • Continuous EEG monitoring to detect seizures in real-time
  • Transcranial Doppler Ultrasound for early detection of vasospasm in patients wtih subarachnoid hemorrhage (ruptured aneurysms)
  • Licox Brain Tissue Oxygenation monitoring to detect early changes in brain oxygen in brain injury patients
  • Intracranial pressure continuous monitoring to detect cerebral edema and in an effort to optimize cerebral blood flow
  • Telemedicine capabilities to provide acute stroke and brain hemorrhage assessments to telestroke network hospitals

St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital has specialized neurological clinical units, which include:

  • 20-Bed Neuro-Intensive Care Unit
  • 42-bed Neuro Acute Care Unit
  • Dedicated Neurosurgical operating room suites
  • A clinical staff of:
  • Board Certified Neuro Intensivists* devoted to the comprehensive multi-system care of critically ill neurological patients and foster multi-disciplinary collaboration with multiple subspecialists
  •  NIH Stroke Scale certified nurses in all units
  • Stroke Coordinator
  • ICU pharmacist
  • Full-time vascular neurosurgeons
  • Full-time neuointerventionalists
