OVERVIEW
Orthopedic specialists at St. Luke's treat a full range of bone, joint, and muscle conditions, including sports injuries; joint disorders of the knee, hip, and shoulder; arthritis; back and neck injuries and disorders; osteoporosis; and hand and foot disorders.
These services are provided by an experienced and skilled team of physicians and caregivers whose priority is returning patients to activities they previously enjoyed. This level of quality is recognized throughout the community. Our team of 64 surgeons handle over 4,000 cases a year.
St. Luke's is home to an active Center for Orthopedic Research and Education (CORE) program. Through CORE St. Luke's strives to advance diagnosis and treatment of diseases related to bones, joints and muscles. Our physicians apply research findings from CORE directly to patient care.
St. Luke’s rheumatologists offer expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of more than 100 different forms of arthritis. In addition, they specialize in the care of several diseases of the immune system (autoimmune disorders).
Among the types of arthritis and autoimmune diseases our physicians specialize in: osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, gout, systemic lupus erythematosus, Sjögren’s syndrome, vasculitis, myositis, and scleroderma.
Many members of our academically oriented staff are also actively involved in clinical research trials for various types of arthritis and autoimmune diseases. Our orthopedic surgeons and rheumatologists work hand in hand to coordinate a full spectrum of care.
To ensure patients scheduled for a joint replacement are well informed about their procedure, a weekly Pre-Op Class is offered and includes representatives from the physical therapy, nursing and social work areas.
TECHNOLOGY
The recent addition of the Stryker Navigation system benefits patients undergoing total hip or knee replacements or hip resurfacing. Such procedures involve a number of steps, and the Stryker system, which can be likened to a very sophisticated GPS system, assures surgeons in real-time of the accuracy of each step before they move on to the next. Not only do patients benefit from greater accuracy in procedures, but navigation allows for safer use of smaller incisions, which cause less immediate pain and lead to faster recovery.
OUR CARE
The patient's care will be provided by a highly qualified nursing staff. St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital was re-designated the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) Magnet status in 2009 due to our commitment to interdisciplinary practice, ongoing professional development, use of evidence-based practice in the delivery of nursing care and ongoing nursing research. We were the 37th hospital in the nation and first in Texas and the Southwest to receive the honor in 2001, and again in 2005. St. Luke's has joined the elite one percent of hospitals in the nation to achieve this status three times.
