HELPFUL INFORMATION FOR VISITORS
How do I get information on a patient?
The new Patient Passcode Program gives patients complete control over who may receive confidential, clinical information regarding their condition.

Upon admission to St. Luke’s, patients will now be given a personal passcode containing the last four digits of their medical record number. This passcode can be given to friends and family members by patients at their discretion, or at the discretion of immediate family members, if the patient’s condition warrants.

When people call the hospital to inquire about a patient’s condition, they must know that patient’s passcode to be given access to the confidential, clinical information. If they do not know the passcode, the information cannot be given at that time and they will be referred to the patient or the patient’s family.

The Patient Passcode Program gives patients the responsibility for authorization of the release of their information. The program was designed to comply with HIPAA, which mandates that healthcare organizations must better control the release of unauthorized confidential patient information.

St. Luke’s has already taken measures to prevent such releases through written, fax and e-mail routes. The creation of the Patient Passcode Program will allow us to ensure that patient privacy and confidentiality is preserved over the phone, as well.

How do I find a patient's room?

  • All the elevators are color coded (blue, orange, purple, red and yellow).  If you're trying to find your way to a particular office or room, you'll probably be told, "Take the blue elevators to the 3rd floor," or "The best way to get there is on the yellow elevator."
  • Patient rooms are also identified by the color elevator to which they are closest.  For example, a patient may be staying in room Y1734.  That means he or she is staying in a room near the yellow elevator on 17th floor, room number 34.
  • Some patients may be staying in the intensive care unit. Those room numbers will be called "Recovery" or "ICU" and are numbered from one to four.  So "ICU 3" means a patient is staying in the recovery/intensive care unit number three.  All of these intensive care units are located on the second floor near the purple elevators.

  • Still other patients may be staying in the intensive care units on the seventh floor of the hospital. Their room numbers will be described as "Seven South 4," for example. This means the patient is staying on the seventh floor in unit number four.  All of "Seven South" units are also nearest to the purple elevators.

  • Another intensive care unit is called "Six South" or "CCU."  Patients staying here may be found on the sixth floor of the hospital near the purple elevators.

Where can I eat at the hospital?

  • St. Luke's has an excellent cafeteria, known as the Bertner Avenue Cafe, located in the basement of the hospital near the blue or yellow elevators.
  • The Bertner Avenue Cafe's grill is open from 6:30 a.m. until 11:00 p.m
  • There is also a snack bar on the second floor near the blue elevators, which is open 24-hours a day.
  • A McDonald's is located on the first floor of Texas Children's Hospital near the yellow elevators.
